Abrams. Hardcover in DJ. Good Good Quarto
177 pp 87 tipped in plates." A great storehouse of the finest Chinese art -- the Imperial Palace Museum collections in Peking -- has been unavailable to Western eyes for many years. Now, in this volume, two major areas of Chinese art -- its refined and spiritual painting and its exquisite ceramics -- are presented in a panoramic sweep extending from the third century B.C. to the masters who lived on into our own times. The colorplates are accompanied by individual commentaries sketching the lives of the artists and the significance of individual pieces. The author provides many fascinating biographical details and translates graceful poems and inscriptions that are usually lost to the Western reader. This volume provides an excellent introduction to Chinese art for the layman as well as a superb collection of new material for the scholar."

66 pp text, 24 black and white plates. "Highly popular at the time of its original publication, Fryís monograph was instrumental in rescuing the artist Bellini from the oblivion of a Victorian-era reputation by reinterpreting and revaluing his art for an early twentieth-century audience. Giving a succinct but definitive view of Belliniís career, Fry not only brought to bear the new "scientific" connoisseur ship in his analysis of individual pictures and their chronology, but he also brought a keen interest into Belliniís innovative use of semi-transparent oil glazes, the psychological depth of his subjects, and Belliniís profound sensitivity to nature."

Notations by previous owners - Sanderson (most likely) made corrections in the text in a few places where type was light or words missing most notably on pp 230 where he crossed the name out, put corrected name in also crossed out place name and put correct place name in. Starkey noted in ink pp 70 " This story gave rise to Mr Addison's Comedy The Drummer or Haunted House." A notation in pencil by another owner pp 170 " This....nothing of a steam engine.", Starkey noted in ink on the back of the title page of 'A Continuation...' " All the tricks in this relation were performed by one Jo. Collins as he afterwards (confessed?) (see?) an account of it in a book called "Anecdotes" in 2 volumes'."

"The book affirmed the existence of witches with malign supernatural powers of magic, and attacked skepticism concerning their abilities. The book strongly influenced Cotton Mather and was influential in the Salem witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts. Mather's Wonders of the Invisible World is largely modeled after this book and its arguments. The book is also famous for telling the ghost story of the Drummer of Tedworth, an early poltergeist story." Wikipedia.

"Well-known Renaissance scholar Rona Goffen offers a new interpretation of Titian's secular paintings of women, setting them in the context of life in sixteenth-century Venice...Goffen shows how female images relate to Titian's professional self-image and to his concern with larger themes: matrimonial images are linked to the means by which women attained and relinquished visibility in Italian Renaissance society, devotional images introduce the paradox of subject matter with a sexual component that both stimulates and inhibits."
