1207 Hoffmann, Richard Fishers' Craft and Lettered Art Tracts of Fishing from the End of the Middle Ages
Hardcover Good Octavo
403 pp "Fishers' Craft and Lettered Art" Provides editions, English translations, and analysis from social, cultural, and environmental perspectives on the three oldest European extended tracts on fishing. Richard Hoffmann explores the history of fishing in popular culture and outlines the economic and ecologic considerations needed to examine and understand the fishing manuals, which are presented in their original languages; Spanish and German; with facing page translations. Close attention is paid to original setting, functions, and possible range of readings, with detailed explanatory notes to help modern fishers and historians. Hoffmann further explores how continental fishing traditions were conveyed from oral craft practice into printed culture, and proposes that these manuals demonstrate a lively and complex interaction between written texts and popular culture. Fishers' Craft and Lettered Art is a fascinating look at one vital aspect of everyday life at the end of the Middle Ages."

1247 Howarth, Patrick Attila: King of the Huns. The Man and the Myth.
Barnes and Noble 1994 Hardcover in DJ. Good Good Octavo
205 pp ‘Patrick Howarth draws on the wealth of evidence provided by recent archaeological finds, as well as on Hungarian sources not known in the West, to give us the first authentic account of the life of Attila. He also provides a careful study of the Attila legends which grew up through the centuries, ranging from Roman chronicle through the Nibelungenlied to Hollywood epic. The contrast between fiction and truth is startling. The early Christian chroniclers called Attila the Scourge of God and thought he had been sent to punish people for their sins. Italian artists portrayed him with horns. The resulting popular picture was of a bloodthirsty tyrant. Basing his interpretation in particular on an account left by a man who dined with Attila and knew his family, Patrick Howarth shows him to have been a man of clemency, tolerance and wisdom, albeit a highly successful man of war. Attila reigned for only eight years. After consolidating an empire which extended to the Caspian he came near to toppling the Roman Empire in both East and West. At one point he was at the gates of Constantinople, demanding and receiving large tributes in gold. His armies then marched through France and Italy, capturing one great city after another. The sister of a Roman emperor sent him a ring as a proposal of marriage, and he left Italy only after a dramatic meeting with Pope Leo the Great. He died on his wedding night after he returned from Italy. His grave is still being sought.’

"Roughly one hundred and thirty ships and thirty thousand men made up the armada, dispatched by a royal fanatic who thought that ""he could organize a huge operation of war without leaving his study."

In 1884 a Spanish naval captian, Cesareo Fernandez Duro published one hundred and eighty-nine letters of documents of the sixteenth century which he discovered in the royal archives. Between them they told a story of how and why the Spanish Armada made its voyage...." This book is based on that information along with some more contemporary records.

The forty years which immediately preceded the breaking out of the Rebellion of 1641 were the most peaceful and prosperous which Ireland had seen for centuries. The industrial progress of the island during this period was remarkable. For the first time in her history Ireland paid her way. But the strings of the Irish harp were not to be played for long. The growing prosperity of Ireland and the wealth of the Irish people was shattered in a moment. The rebellion broke out on the 22nd of October 1641, and the rest is history.

Contents of this scarce nineteenth century volume detail The Irish Parliament Of James II, Ireland From 1641 To The Accession Of James II, The Preparation For The Parliament, The Parliament Of 1689, The Alleged Violation Of The Treaty Of Limerick, The Second Siege And Treaty Of Limerick, The Charge Of Intolerance Against The Irish Protestant Parliament, Two Columns Of Names From The List Of Persons Attainted By The Irish Parliament, Treaty Of Limerick As Ratified By Their Majesties, Letters Patent Under The Great Seal Of England.

1297 James, Henry The Ambassadors.
Heritage Press 1963 Hardcover in slipcase. Good Good Octavo
384 pp Illus by Leslie Saalburg."Lambert Strether is dispatched to Paris by the widowed Mrs. Newsome--his fiancée--to bring back her son Chadwick. It is rumored that Chad has fallen under the spell of a Frenchwoman of dubious reputation, and his mother wants him to return to take over the running of the Newsome Mills, in Massachusetts. Once in Paris, Strether undergoes a personality change. Not only does he advise Chad to remain there with his lover--the charming Mme. de Vionnet--but he comes perilously close to succumbing to the city's magic himself. The ending is both unexpected and deeply ironic; Strether's situation illustrates James's lifelong preoccupation with the differences in culture, morality, and the concept of the good life in a city like Paris vs. a New England mill town. It is, of course, no secret where the author's sympathies lie. As the aging Strether expresses it in a word of advice to a younger character: "Live all you can....Don't miss things out of stupidity. Live!" James considered this novel to be his masterpiece, and--despite its extreme length, slowness, and quiet absence of action or real suspense--critical opinion generally agrees with him."
