Jarvie, Grant Sport in the Making of the Celtic Cultures Leicester 1999. Hardcover Good Octavo 198 pp " This text explores the place, meaning and passion and meaning of rugby in Wales, shinty in Scotland and of football in Brittany. It offers an explanation of the links between civic and ethnic nationalism in Irish sport, the role of the Gaelic Athletic Association in both Ireland and Scotland, and a critical evaluation of the part played by sport in political nationalism in France. The author seeks to explain why so many of the peripheral borderlands of Europe, struggling for elements of autonomy, tend to be pasionate about national and regional forms of sport." Price:

Karwica, Teresa Ubiory Ludowe w Polsce Wroclaw 1995 Hardcover Good Octavo 156 pp The author discusses in this work the regional diversity of peasants` clothes in Poland and attempts to explain its causes. She thinks that differentiation was cansed by various historical, social, economical, andecological conditions of life of the inhabitants of particular regions. Often the cause was the early development of textile industry in the region or the introduction of market economy in the village. Colourful, richly decorated clothes based on factory made fabric appeared then, whereas in the regions distant from cities and industrial centres, self-made, plain, archaically designed clothes prevailed. The pettern scheme of changes in Polish folk clothes as follows: A -the XV - XIX centuries - the changes occur underexternal influences, while the peasants clothes, although they become closer to the wear of other social strata and foreign ethnic groups, retain their separateness. B - the second half of the XIX - beginning of the XX century - the changes occur in the village community garment under the influence of mass introduction of factory made materials, which in case of ceremonial or festive wear serve only to enrich its forms with retaining its specifics. The situation is different in case of traditional everday clothes - they gradually disappear replaced by clothes in towns C- the XX century - factory made fabric dominates. Traditional clothes remain only as ceremonial or festive wear. Although they become more and more a sign of a group`s identity, they are supposed to cause external effects rathes than internal ones (influencing the group itself). They are not subject to changes in their principal forms however the embelishment and variety of colours continually develop. They become more and more theatrical to be shown at the scene by the members of folk teams. In many regions they are only reconstruction, scene costumes, in many others they were completely forgotten. Particular regional and ethnographic clothes are presented in detali in the work as well. "The Bilgoraj-Tarnogrod folk costume was worn in the second half of the l9th century by the dwellers of an area situated in the midst of woods in the hasin of the river Panvia. Kent, Timothy Arthur London Silver Spoonmakers 1500-1697. London The Silver Society 1981. B0007ATFPY First Edition. Softcover. Very Good. Professionally made box to protect the book Octavo 56 pp "Throughout the whole period from 1500 to 1697, many specialist spoonmakers were working in London. This is not to say that other goldsmiths were not making spoons; quite obviously they were. There must also have been numerous spoonmakers operating on a fairly small scale, and in addition the trade would have included a fair number of "all rounders" who included the manufacture of spoons among their other products. Furthermore, the proprietor of a substantial general business might well have had in his employment a journey man concerned with manufacture of spoons. It is clear, however, that at any one time during the period there was in existence a relatively small number of specialist goldsmiths operating what can only be termed "spoon factories" , turning out vast quantities of spoons and supplying the retail trade on a very substantial basis. The names of these leading spoonmakers appear again and again in the Court Minute Books of the London Goldsmiths' company, and it is apparent that they are linked by apprenticeships from generation to generation. The apprentices of one generation were the leading spoonmakers of the next. It is interesting to note that a large proportion of the boys apprenticed came from certain parts of the country; during the earlier part of the 17th century a whole group came from one place, Castle Cary in Somerset. Their position in the spoonmaking trade was analogous to that of the Cafes and Goulds (also Somerset born) who dominated the mid 18th century candlestick business...." Price:
