Starkey noted in ink pp 70 " This story gave rise to Mr Addison's Comedy The Drummer or Haunted House." A notation in pencil by another owner pp 170 " This....nothing of a steam engine.", Starkey noted in ink on the back of the title page of 'A Continuation...' " All the tricks in this relation were performed by one Jo. Collins as he afterwards (confessed?) (see?) an account of it in a book called "Anecdotes" in 2 volumes'."

In June 1790, Burns sent Grose a prose witch tale with a variant in a letter to Grose, following it up with a rhymed version, the superb 'Tam o' Shanter'. Grose naturally preferred the poetic version, and 'Tam o' Shanter' was published in the second volume of Grose's The Antiquities of Scotland. Grose also inspired Burns to write the witty lines 'On Captain Grose's Peregrinations through Scotland':
