822 Douglas, David William the Conqueror : The Norman Impact on England.
University of California Press 1964. Hardcover in DJ. Good/Good Octavo
476 pp

"No medieval King is more famous than William the Conqueror, and no event in the whole of English history has been more debated than the Norman conquest... a fresh analysis has been made both of the causes, and of the true character, of the Norman impact upon England in the eleventh century.

In two respects the book may be said to make a new approach to the subject. Professor Douglas has sought to disregard such polemic as extraneous to the circumstances of the eleventh century and to interpret his subject in the only proper way, which is through the medium of contemporary evidence. Secondly, he takes the view that the Norman influence on England can never be adequately assessed unless a fresh attempt is made to appraise and explain the political and ecclesiastical character of the Normandy which confronted England in 1066."

308 pp Much about the battles of Dunbar and Inverkeithing, two important engagements of the Third English Civil War. The Battle of Inverkeithing was notable due to the audacity of Cromwell in ordering a sea-born invasion of Fife, on the northern shore of the Firth of Forth. If successful, which it was, it would result in a flanking of the main Scottish position at Sterling. While not as large as some other battles, this battle helped to turn the overall tide of the Third English Civil War.

264 pp 4 page list of books for sale by J. Nancrede, the publisher.

Jacques Mallet du Pan (1749 - May 10, 1800), French journalist, of an old Huguenot family, was born near Geneva, the son of a Protestant minister. He was educated at Geneva, and through the influence of Voltaire obtained a professorship at Cassel. He soon, however, resigned this post, and going to London joined HSN Linguet in the production of his Annales politiques (1778-1780).

During Linguet's imprisonment in the Bastille Mallet du Pan continued the Annales by himself (1781-1783); but Linguet resented this on his release, and Mallet du Pan changed the title of his own publication to Mémoires historiques (1783).

From 1783 he incorporated this work with the "Mercure de France" in Paris, the political direction of which had been placed in his hands. On the outbreak of the French Revolution he sided with the Royalists, and was sent on a mission (1791-1792) by Louis XVI to Frankfort to try and secure the sympathy and intervention of the German princes. From Germany he travelled to Switzerland and from Switzerland to Brussels in the Royalist interest.

He published a number of anti-revolutionary pamphlets, and a violent attack on Bonaparte and the Directory resulted in his being exiled in 1797 to Berne. In 1798 he came to London, where he founded the Mercure britannique. He died at Richmond, Surrey, on the l0th of May 1800, his widow being pensioned by the English government. Mallet du Pan has a place in history as a pioneer of modern political journalism. Encyclopedia Britannica

In February and March of 1600, he undertook what he would later call his "Nine Days Wonder", in which he morris danced from London to Norwich (a distance of over a hundred miles) in a journey which took him nine days spread over several weeks, often amid cheering crowds. Later that year he published a description of the event in order to prove to doubters that it was true." Wikipedia

Parnassus Imprints 1994. 0940160579 Hardcover in DJ. Good Good Octavo
296 pp "Provincetown -- the summer of 1916... a significant segment of Greenwich Village's Avant-Garde was there -- including John Reed, Susan Glaspell, Mabel Dodge, Robert Edmund Jones, Mary Heaton Vorse, Max Eastman, Charles Demuth, Marsden Hartley, and William Zorach. By all contemporary accounts, never before in America had so many people who wrote, painted, or acted been thrown together in one small place… Fortunately for O'Neill, he was discovered by this group of free-thinking, free-living bohemians, calling themselves The Provincetown Players, who immediately recognized the artistry in his sea play, Bound for Cardiff, and staged it."

883 Eliot, George The Mill on the Floss.
Heritage Press 1963 Hardcover in slipcase. Good Good Octavo
472 pp. Illus by Wray Manning. "Based on George Eliot's own growing-up years, this 1860 novel is her most overtly autobiographical work. Even the precisely described scenery reflects the area in Warwickshire where she was raised. THE MILL ON THE FLOSS is the story of affectionate, willful Maggie Tulliver, who is hungry for knowledge and experience, and her more conventional and intolerant brother, Tom--a relationship that mirrors that of George Eliot herself and her beloved brother, Isaac. When Maggie's virtue is compromised on an excursion with her cousin's fiancé, her brother repudiates her, and the two become estranged. The book's rather lurid ending--which involves a devastating flood--is controversial: it has even been considered by some critics to have incestuous overtones. But there is no denying that the ending is thematically appropriate, functioning not only as a dramatic climax to the events but as a metaphor for the passion that is the driving force in the story. THE MILL ON THE FLOSS, one of George Eliot's most enduring novels, is a particularly satisfying example of her domestic realism and her intense sensitivity to the rhythms of rural life."

"One of history's most misunderstood figures, Marie Antoinette continues to symbolize the glamour, the extravagance, and ultimately the decadence of French society before the Revolution . . . In To The Scaffold Carolly Erickson provides an estimation of a lost Queen that is psychologically acute, richly detailed, and finally deeply moving. Thoroughly researched and beautifully written, it shows Carolly Erickson's skills at their peak matched by one of the world's best known yet least understood heroines."
