1 Winthrop Boswell, trans Hisperica Famina
San Francisco Privately Printed 1974 Limited edition 400 copies. Hardcover, Blue cloth spine with decorated spirals Good
56 pp "The Latin Poem known as Hisperica Famina is a long mysterious composition which exists in various versions, some fragmentary. The Vatican Library has the only complete text, that known as the A codex which Jenkinson, its publisher, thought came out of Fleury monastery in France. Other texts, all of them incomplete and full of gaps, are ascribed to Echternach abbey in Belgium and the abbey of St. Victor's in Paris. The poem is a mystery as to authorship, date, place of composition and transcription. I have never seen a real translation of its, although Leo Weiner made an attempt which may be seen in his History of Arabico-Gothis Culture. Most scholars attribute the work to a learned group (possibly refugees from the barbarian invasions) who were writing during the last years of the Roman Empire. Although some people think the piece is of Spanish origin, the majority of experts opt for Ireland as the producing milieu. James Kenney felt that the poem was possibly the oldest writing of Irish provenance extant "with the exception of the compositions of Patricius." According to Kenney, the Latin of the text "was so strange as to form practically a secret language."
